Pioneering Autism Diagnosis through Eye Tracking Technology

Recent evidence suggests that leveraging eye tracking technology holds promise in early autism diagnosis
A study by researchers from Atlanta’s Marcus Autism Center and Emory University, as reported by Autism Speaks, focused on infants aged 2 to 6 months, analyzing their eye contact responses to a video featuring a friendly person. The study involved 110 infants and employed eye-tracking technology to precisely measure their gaze patterns on the video screen.
The infants were regularly tested up to 24 months of age, and by this point, 13 infants had received an autism diagnosis. Interestingly, these infants exhibited a gradual decline in eye contact, while non-autistic infants showed an increase. Notably, both groups began with similar levels of eye contact, indicating that this aspect of social functioning declined over the first two years rather than being absent at birth. The most substantial decline was observed in those infants who later exhibited a more severe form of autism.
These findings hold immense significance on multiple fronts. They further substantiate the efficacy of eye tracking technology for early autism diagnosis. Numerous studies have underscored the effectiveness of early intervention for children on the autistic spectrum, making this advancement a potential game-changer.

Moreover, the study authors speculate that, ‘the timing of decline highlights a narrow developmental window and reveals the early derailment of processes that would otherwise have a key role in canalizing typical social development…the observation of this decline in eye fixation—rather than outright absence—offers a promising opportunity for early intervention.’
