Discovering Early Signs of Autism Through Video Analysis
Recent research has validated what we've observed through our experience - trained individuals can detect early signs of autism in short video clips
For years, therapists at our affiliated clinic have been utilizing informal video recordings to assess worrisome signs noticed by parents regarding their child’s behavior. This proves particularly valuable for families residing at a distance from the clinic. In such cases, parents can conveniently provide a video of their child, enabling an initial assessment. This initial evaluation may be followed by an in-person visit to the clinic based on the observations made from the video.
The study, featured in PLOS ONE, involved observers analyzing 100 home videos available on YouTube. Nearly half of these videos depicted children who had previously received an autism spectrum disorder (ASD) diagnosis. Impressively, the observers achieved a remarkable classification accuracy of 96.8% in identifying this diagnosis, demonstrating 94.1% sensitivity and 100% specificity.
This study underscores the potential of short informal videos as an effective means of making an initial assessment of a child’s needs. At the very least, this method can successfully identify children who could benefit from a more comprehensive, face-to-face assessment.
